democrats hypocrites. and what comey asked for days before he was fired. a school bus crashes on a remote road in yuba county,

Sumner County Board Of Education, sending five students to the hospital. we have very precious cargo, our children.
it's about being safe all the time. why the bus wasn't on its regular route, and the safety features that prevented the crash from becoming deadly. 13 children between 6 and 9 years old were on that bus when it crashed.
good evening. thanks for joining us tonight. i'm adrienne moore. i'm sam shane. that bus slid in to a tree and nearly went off an embankment around 9:20 in oregon house in rural yuba county, 20 miles east of marysville.
the bus driver was on his way to drop the children off at yes academy. cbs13's angela musallam is in yuba county with what prevented this crash from becoming a tragedy. five of the children were taken here, they're all expected
to be okay. chp officers say if the tree hadn't propped the bus up, the crash would have been a lot worse. reporter: a close call for 14 school children and a bus driver wednesday morning after this school bus slid off the
road and hit a tree. when i got here, the bus was almost on its side. reporter: dr. francis, superintendent of yuba county schools, rushed over to the scene as soon as he heard about the crash and helped transport eight children to the yes
academy charter school down the road where the bus was supposed to drop the children off. be there to support the parents. reporter: the remaining five children were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. he was going a little bit too
fast as he approached a right hand curve in the roadway. the back end of the school bus slid out. reporter: chp sergeant brian whitner says the bus driver was taking an alternate route to get around a tree that had fallen in the middle of the road.
the blind curve caught the driver off guard and the bus slid in to a tree. a lot of blind curves and inclines and declines so coming down with a vehicle this size and the weight of it, the speed is definitely a factor in this collision.
reporter: the tree and several boulders on the side of the road saved the bus from tumbling down the hill. but cbs13 also learned this school bus has seatbelts and everyone aboard wednesday morning was buckled up. this definitely could have
been a lot worse. reporter: we reached out to the yuba city unified school district and found out 80% of its school bus fleet has seatbelts. the district says there's a regulation requiring all school buses to have seatbelts if
they're built after july of 2005. deputy superintendent robert shemwell issued this statement in response to the crash, saying, quote, student safety is our utmost concern and incidents like this make us continue to re-assess and re-evaluate our
safety measures. shemwell says the district plans to have districts in all its school buses by 2020. he says he's already ordered four new buses. glad to hear these kids are going to be okay. this story had us asking
tonight, are seatbelts legally required on all school buses? federal law requires them on small school buses weighing 10,000 pounds or less but does leave it to the states to decide for seatbelts on school buses larger than that. california is one of six states
that does require them on new buses after july 1st, 2014 have shoulder lap belts installed. but the majority of school buses here in california were made before them. the national transportation highway safety board says there are fewer than six deaths a
year, however, since 2008 it's
