>> eric curry: mr. vaden can you tell us whatthe north carolina mobility fund is and how might it impact transportation in this state? >> ted vaden: yes eric, let me start by thankingyou for enabling us to come on the program and talk with the citizens about this importantnew program for north carolina. the mobility fund is a new program proposed by governorpurdue last summer and approved by the legislature
North Carolina Department Of Education, to generate new sources of funding for transportationprojects in north carolina. and there are three salient features about it that i'd liketo mention to you. one, first, is that these projects, the funding is designated for projectsof statewide or regional significance. another is that they are intended to improve mobilityand reduce congestion; hence mobility fund
the name. and a third factor is that veryinterestingly and very importantly, i think, this funding is going to be available to allmodes of transportation and not just highways. so, we're talking about opportunity to providefunding for -- extra funding for rail, for transit, for ferry, for aviation, for bikeand pedestrian. this is new money. as i said, north carolina, the department of transportationhas been struggling in the last couple years with the recession, just like everyone elseand our funding has been down. we see something like $54 billion worth of projects in thefuture over the next ten years and we have about 10 and a half billion in the pipeline.so this is new funding that will enable us to at least begin to address some of thosecritical needs.
